how to remove shortcut to prefix

This simple step by step will guide you on how to remove “shortcut to …” prefix when you create new shortcut.

Make sure your user have administrator right because it’s needed for editing the registry.

Manual step by step :

  1. Start > Run > type regedit and press enter
  2. Browse to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
  3. On the right pane, double click link key and change the hex value to 00 00 00 00
  4. Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
  5. On the right pane, double click link key and change the hex value to 00 00 00 00.

If there is no link key, you can create one by doing the following :

  1. Right clickanywhere on the right pane > New > Binary Value
  2. Type in link
  3. Double click link key and change the hex value to 00 00 00 00

Easier step by step :

  1. Open notepad and copy the following text :
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
    “link”=hex:00,00,00,00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
    “link”=hex:00,00,00,00

  2. Save it as removeshortcutto.reg or whatever the name you prefer
  3. Double click the file and when ask for confirmation to merge the file into registry, just click YES
